Birth, Death & Rebirth

The Morrigan, The Crow Goddess
The Morrigan, The Crow Goddess

In ancient Ireland, the Mórrigán, one of the Tuatha De Danaan was revered as the Goddess of this key aspect of the triple cycle of life. She is analogous with the Valkyries of the North and Kali the Destroyer of the East. She often shape shifts into a Crow and is sometimes referred to as the Crow Goddess, the Phantom Queen or the Great Queen. It is she who in this form landed on Cúchulainn’s shoulder in the Taín legend to signal his death on the battlefield. She is associated with war and battlefields but her power is much more profound and vast than that. She is one of 3 Sisters (Badb and Macha) and it is said that the Mórrigán is the physically prominent one drawing on the energy of her 2 invisible sisters. She is the least known, feared and understood of the Celtic Goddesses and yet, she is the one that effects us all at key times in our lives. Her energy is subtle yet can be powerfully wild – it all depends on how you personally view death. If you are unafraid of it then you will live life to the full and recognise and relish rebirth. If you are afraid then you will view death with dread and loathing. It is time for us to reclaim and acknowledge her in all her glory. An opportunity to invite healing, emotional growth, and renewal into your life.

This Full Moon, referred to as the Pink moon or sometimes Egg Moon, dictates Easter which is celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full moon that occurs on or after the spring equinox. This Christian festival celebrates Birth, Death & Rebirth

Birth and death, hand in hand, dying a death in one form to create a birth in another form and so on and so on and so on. A natural cycle that catapults us forward on our cosmic journey. The breathe, kick-starting us all into life at birth and leads us out of life, at death. And so we take this opportunity to celebrate those that have passed and to possibly prepare for our own passing in some small way. We need to let go of the old in order to make space for the new, a necessity, in the bigger picture of life. This theme ripples though the everyday births and deaths that take place in our personal lives such as ideas, thoughts, projects, relationships, work, chapters, levels and then of course the births, deaths and rebirths of friends and family and most poignantly our very own birth, death and rebirth.

Spring Equinox is often represented by the spring maiden with willow basket of eggs. The female is represented because, from her, new life comes. The egg symbolises the rebirth of nature, the fertility of the earth and creation. The cosmic egg contains the male and female, light and dark, expansion and contraction, conscious and unconscious, continuity and balance. The egg is potential life, full of promise. Oestre, the goddess of light, brings fertility with the spring. This is the root of the word 'Oestrus', the time in an animal’s sexual cycle when it is fertile and oestrogen is the hormone stimulating ovulation. As we step into the active phase of the year, remember to balance the rational logical mind with instinct and intuition. Learn to listen, to trust and to act on your inner wisdom to bring your whole self back into balance, ready for life.

What does the cycle of Birth, Death & Rebirth mean to you? What have you ever given birth to (this can be a project/book/baby/relationship)? Has a part of you died (your teenage years/childbearing years/a relationship)? What has been reborn in its place that you are aware of (your adult life/Crone time/a deeper relationship with yourself)?

Join me to partake on a shamanic journey to meet with the Morrigan to navigate your death and rebirth journey under the energy of this beautiful and powerful April Full Moon.

This is a gathering of women, soul sisters, from all walks of life, all ages, coming together around the time of the full moon to share, cleanse, reflect and connect with the wisdom and beauty of each other, the moon, life and our personal soul journeys.
